A regulation enacted in February 2022 requires all drivers seeking a HazMat endorsement to complete standardized Entry Level Driver Training as mandated by the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration).

For those acquiring a HazMat endorsement for the first time, the federal requirements involve three critical steps:

TSA Compliance Checks:

Complete an application, get fingerprinted, and undergo a background check to ensure TSA compliance.

Authorized ELDT Instruction:

Enroll in an Entry Level Driver Training course listed with an FMCSA-approved provider.
Check the Training Provider Registry

Mastery of HazMat Handling:

Pass the HazMat knowledge test at your local DMV, DDS, or Licensing Agency.

Upon fulfilling these steps and obtaining a clear background check, your HazMat qualification will be integrated with your existing CDL. Note that a standalone CDL is necessary, as the endorsement cannot be added to a standard driver’s license.
