Responsibilities
- Haul refrigerated food and consumer goods over the road in the lower 48 states
- Drive about 2,600 to 3,000 miles each week, with an average haul of about 1,200 miles
- Deliver time sensitive loads on schedule and keep trailer temperatures correct
- Handle mostly no touch freight, and load or unload when you take the optional paid work
- Complete DOT pre trip and post trip inspections, including brakes, lights, hoses, and leaks
- Hook and unhook trailers, raise and lower landing gear, and open and close cargo doors
- Keep hours of service records current and follow DOT and company rules
- Plan trips and routes and stay in contact with your driver manager and dispatch
- Fill out delivery paperwork correctly in English
- Stay out on the road for stretches of about 3 to 5 weeks, including night driving
- Work through changing weather, traffic, terrain, and schedule changes, and back and maneuver safely at customer sites
Qualifications
- Class A CDL, or a graduate of a CDL school
- Commercial driver license with a hazardous materials endorsement
- At least 22 years old before training starts
- Never failed a DOT drug test
- No failed non DOT drug test in the last 7 years
- No DUI or DWI in the last 5 years, and no more than one ever
- No more than 4 moving violations in the last 3 years
- No careless or reckless driving citations in the last 3 years
- No major preventable accidents in the last 12 months, and no more than 2 in the last 3 years
- Work or unemployment history that can be verified for the last 3 years
- No unpaid citations or fines and no upcoming court dates
- Good references from past employers
- Experienced drivers taking the first seat need one year of cross country tractor trailer experience with an irregular route carrier, verified through a company safety department. This does not apply to student drivers
- Must pass a company road test, DOT physical exam, and drug test
- Must pass a background check, and findings are reviewed case by case
- Must be a U.S. citizen or a registered alien with full work documents
- Must provide a Social Security card or birth certificate
- Must meet DOT physical standards, including distant vision of at least 20/40 in each eye with or without glasses and hearing within DOT limits
- Able to read, write, and speak English well enough to complete paperwork and plan trips
- Able to lift up to 100 pounds, climb 4 to 10 feet, and get in and out of the cab many times a day
- Must live anywhere in the United States except California

- Paid training at $800 per week, paid every Friday
- Guaranteed $1,000 per week minimum as a solo driver if you stay available for dispatch all 7 days of the pay period and do not turn down loads
- First year pay averages about $70,000
- Third year pay averages more than $90,000

- Layover pay of $100 per day
- Detention pay of $20 per hour after 2 hours at a shipper or receiver
- Optional load and unload pay of $150 to $250 per load
