Third-party CDL testing

If you received your Commercial Learner’s Permit after February 7, 2022, you will need to complete an FMCSA approved ELDT training program to be eligible to take a CDL skills test.

Commercial Driving Academy in Duncan, South Carolina is pleased to offer Third Party testing for both Class A and B commercial drivers licenses. If you have completed the required training, you have the ability to schedule your CDL test at your earliest convenience at CDA.

Before testing

If you have received your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) outside of South Carolina, you are eligible for third-party testing as long as you also possess a driver’s license from the same state. Please note that you must be at least 18 years old to test for your CDL to drive within the state that issues your driver’s license, and 21 years old to test to drive outside of state lines.

CDL requirements by class

In order to obtain a Commercial Drivers License(CDL) within the state of South Carolina, you must meet the following requirements: Possess a valid South Carolina commercial learner’s permit, a current D.O.T card (less than 2 years old), provide proof of vehicle insurance and registration, certify that you understand and meet all FMCSA regulations, provide a test vehicle of the same class you intend to be licensed for, provide proof of vehicle insurance, provide a passenger over 21 years of age to ride with you in your test vehicle, complete the required training, then schedule and pass your CDL skills test. After obtaining the required documents, complete the online application and pay the required fees.

There are additional endorsements that can be added to the CDL you are testing for. These endorsements are dependent upon what class you are testing for, but are as follows: (H) Hazardous Material-Hazmat, (N) Tanker Vehicle, (T) Double/Triple Trailers, and (X) Combination Hazmat and Tanker. To obtain the Hazmat(H) endorsement, you must pass an additional test based on information in section 9 of the South Carolina CDL Drivers manual. The Hazmat(H) endorsement also requires you to undergo a Transportation Security Administration(TSA) federal security threat assessment.

As of February 7, 2022, you will need to complete an FMCSA approved ELDT training program to be eligible to apply for Hazardous Materials (H) endorsements.
