FMCSA has recently made changes to the Vehicle Inspection requirements for the CDL test. You are now required to inspect only safety-critical items as identified by FMCSA. At CDA, we will teach you the new requirements for the test, as well as additional everyday safety practices.
The Basic Skills (backing) portion of the test has also been updated. Due to limited visibility, backing is a very dangerous part of trucking. FMCSA has updated Basic Skills testing to reflect the daily backing skills utilized in the trucking industry. Reverse offset alley dock backing is one of those new maneuvers and is commonly used in the real world.
The Road Test portion was not updated. You will still demonstrate your ability to operate a commercial vehicle in most road situations. Among other things, you will be scored on speed control, lane changes, use of turn signals, following traffic control devices as well as your ability to control the tractor and trailer.
